seven-card stud

(n phrase) A poker game in which each player starts with two hole cards and one upcard, and then the dealer gives each active player three more upcards, and then a final downcard. Thus each player ends up with seven cards, four face up and three face down. Betting commences on the third card and continues with each round of cards. At the showdown, the player holding the best five-card poker hand using his seven cards wins the pot. The game is played straight high or high-low.
